    My partner and I are in the process of planning our wedding in Iowa city (trying to plan from Chicago) and called Deluxe Cakes multiple times to setup an appointment. Each time, I received an answering machine that promised to call me back. I NEVER heard back. I don't like to beg someone to have my business, so I went elsewhere. Stumbled across Molly's cupcakes, customer service was awesome, and we booked them to do our wedding. What a miss for Deluxe. I was really excited to speak with them about doing our wedding, but they can't even return a phone call

    Everything here is perfect! The overall style, outdoor patio, neighborhood, coffee (it's roasted by Intelligentsia), and quality of the baked goods... oh. my. I don't know why I did it but I bought a loaf of pumpkin bread (I have gobbs of frozen pumpkin at home and make it myself all the time), but holy macaroni it was delicious! I don't have any idea why or how, it just was. It was pricey but ended up being well worth it. Whenever I visit a new bakery, I also like to try their chocolate croissants. The Deluxe chocolate croissant is buttery and flaky and so so perfect! Granted it needs more chocolate, but I don't think I'll ever eat a croissant and say, "dang, this thing has way too much chocolate."

    The croissant was great, vanilla cupcake are oily but good flavor, haven't tried the carrot cupcake yet. My son didn't enjoy the cream puff but my daughter in law ate it and liked it. Brewed coffee was rich and robust. Sadly the hot chocolate and vanilla steamer were disappointing. The ambiance is very quaint and the outside seating is beautiful. We've gone twice now, both times the items were hit and miss. Maybe we'll go again one more time.

    The baked goods Look really good, but the taste is average. I've tried it three or four times now, as I wish there was a great bakery in the area. Too bad this is not it. Also, the owner is really sour and should not be interacting with customers. You're better off at bread garden, new Pi, or one of the cupcake stores in town.

    Deluxe Bakery fits into the surrounding neighborhood perfectly. The exterior of the building left a very good 1st impression on me before I even walked through the door. Upon entering I am greeted by a very friendly and helpful staff. The person at the register went beyond my expectations and took the time to describe the baked goods they had for that afternoon. The pastries were very good and rotate seasonally. However, I agree with a few other Yelpers in regards to the bakery items' price point. The baked goods and drinks are wonderful but they are a bit pricey. What Deluxe bakery has is charm and atmosphere, not to mention great customer service and phenomenal food. In my book, I do feel spending a couple extra bucks for these things is worth it!

    A.DOR.A.BLE!!! (I say that with a French accent in my head.) This place could totally bankrupt me. It is so-oo-oo charming, cute and neighborhoody. The best part is Leo in his gated community which adds the perfect touch cuz he's just "wovable"! Plus, offstreet parking is always a bonus. Back to the food. Had the scone. Loved! I love sheet scones or ones that come out of a pan as these do. I like the individual roll scone blobs, too, but I do love the cut ones. I found out the name of the bar that I described in my last review. It was the redhead. I took one to my mumsy and she about keeled over from how wonderful it was. (Can't do that too much to a woman of her years.) Plus, you know me, I am particular. I ordered the fresh fruit tarts and they informed me they could make it with a lemon based custard. Yes! Then, I had them box them up for distribution for my various stops along the way. I swear - you can't really get Chicago in Iowa City except at Deluxe.

    The customer service here has done a one eighty. This is now one of our favorite neighborhood stops on our walks. My boys love it, and it's a great place to stop and grab a cookie and a coffee. I think having the window between the kitchen and the counter has made a huge difference.

    I ordered a cake last minute at 5:00pm on Friday for "tomorrow" Saturday pick up for family member anniversary but would like it to be freshly made. I was assured that it's baking that evening so it can cool overnight and will be fresh for the next day by 1pm. I came to pick up and they couldn't find my cake then told me they thought I said next Saturday (maybe seeing that I'm Asian with an accent they think it's easier to turn over blame than to apologize for their mistake). Then they grabbed one from the glass shelves and said it's still the freshest, even though the strawberries (it was a vanilla strawberry) looked rotten and the cream is so hard. They told me to leave it in room temperature if it was to be served that evening but assured that it wasn't frozen or anything. It was the driest and hardest cake I have ever had! It's unbelievable that it is from a gourmet cake baker that charge $25 for a tiny 6 inch cake. I hope it was because the cake they gave me was very very old. Otherwise, I don't know how they get business baking cakes like that. The lady who looked like the boss does have the driest personality as well.

    I'm totally confused by the customer "service." This place was recommended by our friends, who've been their customers for years--and the owner's husband is our pediatrician! So I was excited to be part of this community/friends/family business, but I called to try to schedule a simple birthday cake for my 4 year old daughter, thinking maybe I'd order cupcakes too, and the guy on the phone seemed totally annoyed that I was calling. He was more interested in dissuading me than in taking my order. We never even got to the "simple vanilla sheet cake" part because he spent my time telling me about their $15 delivery boundaries and how much their driver earned per hour, and that the weekend of my daughter's bday party was a weekend they had 50 orders and mine was gonna be hard to "get in there." What the heck is that?? I just said, well, this doesn't sound encouraging, I guess I'll call some other places. He just said "bye." Definitely not what I expected. Woulda dropped over $100 on cake and extras. Is this a real business?

    As every bakery I always try different things so here we go. Their customer service was excellent. Was promptly helped and was very nice and explained all the desserts if we had an questions. Their food is different they seem to be from where the culture originates from such as their Russian tea cookies and there macaroons I got the macaroons delicious would recommend not over sweet at all nice tasty treat. I got there carrot cake and there some white cake with I think it was strawberry sauce, I thought there cake tasted awful and would not go back for that. But everything else is good Saturday is the only day they do donuts and sticky buns ...just an fyi

    Deluxe is a great place. Local. Not a chain. The negative reviewers have not actually been there but were frustrated by not having a phone call returned which is not a fair way to judge a place. If you want catering, go in and take a look at what they do and order in person. What you'll see is a working kitchen viewable from a pleasant place to drink coffee and eat a pastry and sit and have a chat. Their prices are comparable to similar local places, they use local ingredients and never shortening, corn syrup and other junk. They even sell local eggs at the counter. If you want a cupcake that's half frosting you know where to go. If you want that (w/ less frosting) and a whole lot more go to Deluxe. Their cakes are (often) customizable specialty items. I bought one of their pies around the holidays and it was comparable to what I would have paid at New Pi but it looked cooler and tasted great.

    Early bird gets the worm. If you stop in mid-morning on the weekend the pickins are slim, as they will have sold out of sticky buns and other breakfast pastries. Last time this happened to me I had the whole family with me and the kids ended up getting excruciatingly sweet and rich dessert pastries as a substitute ... And they were pricey. I could have taken the whole family out for breakfast at a diner for what 4 pastries and some coffees cost. I have yet to stop in and find anything resembling a savory pastry ... Everything I've ever seen behind the counter has been insanely rich and sweet ... Fine if that's your thing ... But if not you can get a a scone down at the Bread Garden for a reasonable price. I think I'll just patronize Deluxe when I need a little special something as a gift. The pastries are quality, but with a price to match.

    My favorite place to get a birthday cake, very tasty. I hired them to do my wedding as well and they did a beautiful job decorating the cakes, delivered on time, price was fair. It was great meeting the owner for the first Consultation and found her very helpful. When we went back I did find it odd she wouldn't come out to talk to us when I had a specific request for a decorative touch and had to pass along a drawing that got misinterpreted. But I know they are a very busy popular bakery and I would for sure hire them again regardless.

    Great baked goods. I picked up a lemon raspberry cake for my girlfriend's birthday, and she loved it. So light and flavorful, but then you get a mouthful of butter cream frosting that knocks you out. Great place with great food! Nice little location for a coffee and a pastry.

    I'm surprised that there are so many negative reviews about Deluxe. I live a few blocks away, and end up walking over a couple mornings a week. They serve Intelligentsia Coffee, which is roasted in Chicago and is good drip coffee for IC and the Midwest in general - the only other places in town that have strong brews are the Java House and Prairie Lights, and guess what - PL serves Deluxe baked goods. It's true that they don't do savory treats, but every time I've been there they've had a kind of 'sour' scone: filled either with rhubarb or raspberries. They're what I usually go for, and are good if you don't want something 100 percent sweet. Also, their yogurt and granola is seriously delicious. Both are homemade (last time I went the granola had dried cherries in it - I never knew how decadent they were until I ate them at Deluxe), and a few fresh berries are added on top. I just wish the portion size was bigger, because I could eat a bowl of it. Occasionally their morning jam biscuits (I think that's what they're called) are a bit undercooked, but 90% of what I've eaten there is consistently good. As for pricing, I'd rather pay a little more to go to a place that does one thing right, is locally owned and away from the school-year craziness of the ped mall. It's not a one-stop-shop for everything, but that's part of what makes it special. I'm willing to walk round the counter and stick my head in the kitchen door if they don't hear me come in (and they often don't, what with the music, people and mixers going). In this day and age it's amazing to think that the person serving you is the same one who got up early and measured the flour, beat the batter, and pulled your scone from the hot oven. Getting to meet the people who actually make our food is becoming a lost tradition, and just as I don't mind if my tomato from the farmer's market has a few spots, I'm okay with a staff that is more comfortable in the kitchen than in front of the cash register. Also, this isn't mentioned in the business info, but they have free wifi. They also have a box of kids books, and the owner's son is around in the summer, so it's pretty kid-friendly.

    Stopped by on a nice breezy summer morning on the way to visit the Hoover Birthplace in West Branch. After 1000 miles of bad fast food, I wanted to find something mellow and tasty to relax at with the gf and our puppy. We saw the nice patio out front and asked the owner if we could bring him, she said sure, so we were in! Everything on the menu is sweet, so we got the sticky bun and the butter dipped muffin, which is a cinnamon nut muffin. We also got two mugs of coffee, which tasted pretty good but not outstanding. I was craving some chocolate, so we also got chocolate petit fours, which were really good.

    This adorable little bakery is tucked away in a residential section of Iowa City. Those willing to drive the short way from the main downtown strip will be pleasantly surprised. Deluxe Cakes serves some of the most amazing cupcakes I have ever had. The Chocolate Turtle confection was a moist chocolate cake with a layer of chocolate mousse and marshmallow topped by a delicious chocolate ganache coating with pecans sprinkled on top. Pure indulgence! Remarkably, the cupcake was not overly sweet and had just the right amount of topping - we could not stop eating until every crumb was gone. The chocolate French macaroons were far less impressive given that my standard is Lauderee and the French patisseries of Dakar, Senegal. These were more of a chocolate cookie sandwich (granted, very good cookie sandwiches at that!) The key lime tart with gingerbread crust and meringue topping was a unique flavor combination - although the crust was a tad dry, the rich, lime flavored filling was creamy and delicious and the topping was sweet and well toasted. I am not sure I would have combined gingerbread and lime, but I did enjoy this dessert quite a bit! The pastry shop houses a suitably sized coffee and espresso machine so the next time I stop by I will certainly order a cappuccino to go with my treats. Overall, this place is an adorable place to stop in for a homemade baked good and a cuppa. The front has some nice patio seating and inside the vintage-y chairs and tables make for a cute spot to sit. Will return again soon!

    I have to say that this place is adorable, but their offerings do not live up to the ambiance. Also, I agree with others who have commented that the people who work here detract from the experience. It is not a welcoming or fun environment. Although the owner worked as a pastry chef in Denver, the cakes are completely disappointing. They are well decorated and look adorable, but they are tasteless and the consistency of the frosting is too thick and heavy and it is also tasteless. I have gotten two cakes from Deluxe and both times I ended up throwing them out. You will do much better with the cakes made at Pioneer Co op in town. Although people seem to love the hot donuts they make on Saturday morning, once they cool down they taste like sugared cardboard. As expected, cupcakes are no better than the cakes. I do like their cookies, in particular choc chip and oatmeal and their iced decorated cookies are quite cute and good. I live in the neighborhood and Deluxe is a really nice part of the hood. I just wish their cakes were decent and the service was welcoming.

    They have delicious, strong brewed coffee, and finer pastries like millefeuilles and fruit tartlets along with sky-high frosted cupcakes and half-dollar size drop cookies. Cakes, pies, scones, petit-fours and made-to-order anything. Yesterday I had a thick, densely flavored mocha chocolate chip cookie and a red velvet cupcake (too much too-sweet frosting, but no complaints otherwise). Today I noshed on a chocolate cupcake with vanilla frosting: perfectly moist cake, but sadly the frost job was again overly saccharine. But like I care. When I arrived at Deluxe on Wednesday, a mom and little boy were enjoying afternoon treats and reading from the crate of children's books stashed near the window seats. And during the half hour I stayed there, two more under-tens with mother in tow swung in for after school cookies. Obviously Deluxe and its proud "butter, butter, and more butter" philosophy have won over the most important judges. I just hope they don't mind if I start camping out there a couple times a week.     I went here on a weekend morning because they advertise fresh yeast doughnuts (or donuts) on their website. By the time I got there all they had was ~12 doughnuts on a plate by their cash register. They were all cinnamon sugar doughnuts and ended up costing $2.50/each! Never going there again, the Bread Garden Market has doughnuts (glazed) every weekend for $.89. I have no idea how this place thinks they can charge that much...
